Our square roots and exponents activities with answers for grade 6 consist of exciting ways of teaching and learning 6th graders how to solve square roots and exponents. While solving, you'll realize there is no difference between exponent and repeated multiplication. That is to say; exponents are simply a shorthand for repeatedly multiplying the same number by itself.

How to solve square roots with exponents free with answers

We have designed this resource for 6th graders to learn how to solve square roots with exponents free with answers. First of all, we must understand that the square root of a number is that factor of a number when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. The number of times we multiply that factor is what we refer to as exponents. We write it to the right, above any math expression.

For instance, 34 means you should multiply 4 by itself 3 times. i.e. 4 x 4 x 4 x 4.

The number 4 is the base, while 3 is the exponent.

The reason for always simplifying a square root is to rewrite it in a way that will be easy to understand, especially when solving other math concepts, like algebra.

Exponent rules and their importance

It is advantageous to have a mastery of exponent rules and their importance. Of the many exponent rules, we must take note of the zero property rule and the negative property rule.

  • The zero property rule states that any number raised to the power zero is 1.

For example: 20 = 1

  • The negative property rule Any real number raised to a negative power will be one divided by the real number raised to the positive power of that same number. For example: 2-4 = ½4

We should note that exponent rules make it easier to calculate extremely large or extremely small numbers, especially in real life when calculating square feet, square meters, and even cubic centimeters.
